전 = hanja 前 (front, before): what came before is the former one
전 is the Sino-Korean reading of 前, the same character as Chinese qián and Japanese zen. It appears in 오전 (午前, before noon = a.m.) and 전 남친 (ex-boyfriend). Before in time gives the sense previous or former.
