잠 is the hanja 暫 (brief, temporary) and 시 is 時 (time, hour), the same 시 used in 시간 (time). Together they literally say a short time. Bonus sound hook: 잠 also means sleep in Korean, so 잠시 is a nap-sized stretch of time.
