잔 comes from the hanja 盞, a small shallow cup; the 皿 at its base is the dish radical. It names the vessel and also counts drinks: 커피 한 잔 is one cup of coffee, 술 두 잔 is two glasses of alcohol. Same root as Chinese 盏 (zhǎn).
