📅 昨年 = yesterday (昨) + year (年): the yesterday-year
작 (昨) means past or yesterday, as in 작일 (yesterday). 년 (年) is year, the same 년 as in 내년 (next year) and 올해's formal twin 금년 (this year). So 작년 is literally the year that was yesterday.
