있다

itda · TOPIK 1

to have

sounds like it + da: it is there, so it exists and you have it

The stem 있 (it) plus the dictionary ending 다 (da). Korean says possession as existence: 책이 있다 is literally a book exists, meaning I have a book. Its opposite is 없다 (eopda), to not exist or not have.
