어떤 = 어떠한 squeezed short: 어떻다 (to be how) + ㄴ, so a how-ish noun
어떤 is the noun-modifying form of 어떻다, to be how. Same 어 root as 어디 (where) and 어느 (which). Before a noun it asks what kind of; in a statement it turns vague and means some or a certain.
