📰 신문 = 新 new + 聞 heard: newly heard things, i.e. news on paper
Hanja 新聞: 신 (新) means new, as in 신년 new year; 문 (聞) means to hear, as in 소문 rumor. A newspaper is literally the new things heard. Same characters give Japanese shinbun, also newspaper.
