할 수 있다 = there is a way to do it, so: can
수 is the noun hiding inside the Korean can/cannot pattern. 할 수 있다 literally says a means of doing exists; 할 수 없다 says no means exists. Learn 수 as way or means and the whole grammar pattern explains itself.
