🌱 生 (saeng, be born) + 기다: something gets born = it arises
The saeng is Sino-Korean 生, the same root as in 생일 (birthday) and 생활 (life). When a thing is born into existence, it has arisen. The looks sense follows: 잘생기다 = well-born, so well-formed, handsome.
