🎒 방학 = 放 (release) + 學 (study): school lets you go
Hanja 放學 literally means releasing from study. 방 (放) is the same let-go root as in 방송 (broadcast, send out) and 해방 (liberation); 학 (學) is the study root in 학교 (school) and 학생 (student). Study released = vacation.
