勿論 = do not (勿) + discuss (論): no need to discuss it
The hanja 勿 (mul) means do not and 論 (ron) means discuss or argue, as in 논문 (thesis) and 토론 (debate). Something that needs no debate is obvious, so 물론 means of course. Same word as Japanese mochiron (勿論).
