명 = hanja 名 (name): one name on the list per person counted
명 comes from 名, the character for name, as in 이름 and 유명 (famous = having a name). Counting people formally is like counting names on a register: 세 명 = three names = three people. It follows native numbers: 한 명, 두 명, 세 명.
