말씀 (respectful words) + 하다 (to do) = to speak, said of someone honored
말씀 is the honorific form of 말 (speech, words), and 하다 turns a noun into a verb. So 말씀하다 is the elevated version of 말하다, used when the speaker is an elder, teacher or superior: 선생님께서 말씀하셨어요 = the teacher said.
