말다

malda · TOPIK 1

to stop, refrain (used in negative commands)

🛑 malda sounds like mal-do: do it badly? Then stop, don't do it

Mal means bad in Spanish and French, so malda reads as a bad deed to drop. It is the verb behind the negative command -지 마 (ji ma): 가지 마 = don't go. 말 also means speech, so 말다 is the word you say to halt someone.
