🐾 動物 = move (동) + thing (물): a thing that moves
동 (動) means move, as in 운동 (exercise) and 자동 (automatic). 물 (物) means thing, as in 식물 (plant = planted thing) and 선물 (gift). An animal is literally the thing that moves, in contrast to a plant.
