독일

dogil · TOPIK 1

Germany

🥨🍺 독일 = 獨逸, hanja spelling out the sound of Deutsch (via Japanese doitsu)

Japanese wrote Deutsch as 獨逸 (doitsu), choosing characters for sound alone. Korean borrowed the spelling and read it with its own hanja values: 獨 = 독, 逸 = 일. So dogil is Deutsch filtered through two languages, which is why it sounds nothing like Germany.
