🎓🏫 대학 = 大 (dae, big) + 學 (hak, learning): the big learning
Hanja 大學, the same word as Chinese dàxué and Japanese daigaku. 대 (big) also appears in 대문, main gate; 학 (learning) appears in 학교, school, and 학생, student. A university is literally the place of big learning.
