권

gwon · TOPIK 1

(volume counter for books)

📚 권 = hanja 卷, a rolled scroll: one scroll, one volume

Early books were scrolls, and 卷 means to roll up. Each rolled scroll was one unit of a work, so 권 became the counter for book volumes: 책 한 권 = one book, 두 권 = two. Same root as Chinese 卷 juàn and Japanese 巻 kan.
