📚 工夫 = work + effort, then 하다 (to do): to do effortful work
공부 comes from hanja 工夫, the same characters as Chinese gongfu (kung fu): skill earned through time and effort. Add 하다 (to do) and you get the verb. Studying is doing your kung fu.
