~酒
~しゅ · ~shu · JLPT N2 · noun
alcohol
🍶 酒 = 氵 water + 酉 wine jar; shu as in nihonshu and umeshu
As a suffix, ~酒 (shu) names a type of alcohol: 日本酒 nihonshu is Japanese sake, 梅酒 umeshu is plum liqueur, 果実酒 kajitsushu is fruit wine. The 酉 part is an old character for a wine jar.
酒 — water 氵 + 酉 (wine vessel)
酒 combines 氵 (water) with 酉, an ancient pictograph of a wine jar with a narrow neck. 酉 alone originally meant fermented liquor, but as it was borrowed for the tenth earthly branch, the water radical was added to keep the 'alcoholic drink' meaning clear.
