~行

~ぎょう · ~gyou · JLPT N2 · noun

line

行 began as a drawing of a crossroads; streets run in rows, so ~行 = line

As a suffix, ~ぎょう counts lines of text: 三行 is three lines. The rows of the kana chart are named the same way: あ行 is the a-row and か行 is the ka-row.

行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
