~船
~せん · ~sen · JLPT N2 · noun
ship
🚢 船 = 舟 boat radical + 㕣; read sen as in 汽船 kisen, steamship
The left part 舟 is the old pictograph for a small boat, so the kanji is built around the idea of a vessel. Counting with sen is formal: 一船 issen, 二船 nisen. Everyday speech usually counts boats with 隻 seki or 艘 sō instead.
船 — boat radical 舟 + 㕣 (phonetic)
船 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 舟 depicts a boat and gives the meaning, while the right side 㕣 originally suggested the sound. Together they refer to a ship or vessel, a meaning that has stayed stable since early seal script.
