~社

~しゃ · ~sha · JLPT N2 · noun

company

🏢 社 = shrine/society; Japanese counts companies with sha, as in 会社 kaisha

社 originally meant an earth-god shrine where a community gathered, so it came to mean society or association. That is why 会社 kaisha means company, and 3社 sansha means three companies.

社 — 示 (altar/spirit) + 土 (earth)
Originally referred to the god of the soil and the altar where villagers worshipped it. The 示 component signals ritual or spirits, while 土 means earth, together evoking a community shrine. The meaning later broadened to 'community' and 'society'.
