~着

~ちゃく · ~chaku · JLPT N2 · noun

apparel

👔🏁 着 = wear + arrive: 一着 is one suit worn, or the first runner to arrive

The kanji 着 means both to put on clothes (着る) and to arrive (到着). As a counter, it counts outfits: 二着 = two suits. In races it is your finishing place: 一着 = the first to arrive. Hook: chaku sounds like chalk up, as in chalking up a first-place finish.

着 — sheep 羊 (top) + eye 目 (bottom)
着 originated as a variant of 著, which depicted plants emerging visibly above ground (grass radical 艹 over 者). Over time 着 split off to carry meanings like 'attach,' 'wear,' or a verb suffix marking ongoing action (zhe), while 著 kept senses like 'manifest' or 'author.'
