~滴

~てき · ~teki · JLPT N2 · noun

drop

💧 氵 water radical + 啇 teki sound: water counted drip by drip

As a suffix, ~滴 counts drops: 一滴 (itteki) is one drop. The left side 氵 marks water, and the right side 啇 supplies the teki reading, the same sound as in 敵 and 適. Teki also sounds like tick, the noise of a dripping tap.

滴 — water radical 氵 + 啇 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The water radical 氵 gives the meaning 'liquid,' while 啇 (dī/dí) supplies the sound. Originally referred to water falling drop by drop, and by extension came to mean 'a drop' as both verb and measure word.
