~屋
~や · ~ya · JLPT N5 · noun
shop
🏪 屋 = roof/house: tack ya onto a product and you get the shop that sells it
屋 means house or roofed building. As a suffix it turns goods into the place selling them: 本屋 (hon-ya) = book house = bookshop, 花屋 (hana-ya) = flower shop. It can also name the person who runs it, like パン屋 for the baker.
屋 — corpse 尸 + reach/arrive 至
屋 originally depicted a place where one arrives (至) to rest under a roof, with 尸 here representing a covering or dwelling rather than a corpse. The character came to mean 'house' or 'room'. Today it commonly refers to a house or a room within a building.
