~商

~しょう · ~shou · JLPT N2 · noun

merchant

~商 — merchant

🏪 ~しょう sounds like show: a ~商 merchant puts goods on show to sell

Added after a noun, ~商 means a dealer in it: 古物商 antique dealer, 貿易商 trader. Tradition says that after the Shang (商) dynasty fell, its people became travelling traders, so 商人 came to mean merchant.

商 — 亠 lid + 丷 + 冏 window/enclosure
In oracle bone script 商 depicted a raised platform or altar-like structure, and it served as the name of the Shang dynasty and its capital region. The modern components are a late simplification of that pictograph and carry no separate meaning. The sense 'trade, merchant' arose later, traditionally linked to Shang people who travelled to buy and sell after their dynasty fell.
