~向け

~むけ · ~muke · JLPT N2 · noun

for ~

🎯 向け comes from 向く, to face: a thing that faces its audience, e.g. 子供向け

向け is the noun form of 向ける, to point or turn toward. Add it after a group to say who something is made for: 子供向け means for children, 初心者向け means for beginners. Think of the product as aimed at that group.

向 — roof 宀 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph of a house with a north-facing window, showing an opening in a wall under a roof. The early meaning was 'north window,' which extended to 'the direction something faces,' then broadly to 'toward' or 'direction.' The modern shape simplified the window into 口.
