~号

~ごう · ~gou · JLPT N2 · noun

magazine

🚢📰 号 = mouth 口 calling out a name or number; gō, as in ready to go, ship No. 1

Old form 號 had a roaring tiger 虎 beside 号: a loud call, then a name or number. So 第5号 means issue No. 5 of a magazine, and a ship's name takes 号 as in はやぶさ号, the Hayabusa.

号 — mouth 口 + tiger 虎
Originally written 號, combining 口 (mouth, indicating a cry or call) with 虎 (tiger) as the phonetic and a hint at a loud roar. It first meant to shout or call out, then extended to a name, title, or signal. The simplified form 号 keeps only the upper element.
