~切れ
~きれ · ~kire · JLPT N2 · noun

✂️🔋 切れ kire comes from 切る kiru, to cut: the supply has been cut off
Attach it to a noun to say that thing has run out: 電池切れ (denchi-gire) means the battery is dead, 時間切れ (jikan-gire) means time is up, and 品切れ (shina-gire) means sold out. After a noun it is often voiced to -gire.
切 — 七 (phonetic) + 刀 (knife radical)
切 is a semantic-phonetic compound: 刀 'knife' gives the meaning of cutting, while 七 supplies the sound. The original sense was to slice or cut with a blade. From there it extended figuratively to 'close to' (as in pressed against) and 'urgent/earnest', as in 切实.
