🪑 会 (kai) = meet; tacked onto a word it makes a meeting or club
会 is the same character as in 会う (au, to meet) and 会社 (kaisha, company). As a suffix it turns the word before it into a gathering: 飲み会 = drinking party, 勉強会 = study group, 運動会 = sports day.

The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
