~丁目

~ちょうめ · ~choume · JLPT N2 · noun

town

~丁目 — town

🏘️ 丁 = town block + 目 = -th: 3丁目 is the third block of the district

目 is the ordinal marker also found in 一つ目 (the first one), so 丁目 counts blocks in order. It sounds like show-me: tell the driver show me 2-choume. Japanese addresses run district, then 丁目 number, then block, then building.

丁 — single stroke pictograph, originally a nail
丁 is a pictograph of a nail viewed from above or the side, showing the head and shaft. Its original meaning was 'nail,' later extended to 'sturdy adult male,' then to general senses like 'individual person' or 'fourth' in ordinal lists. The 'nail' meaning is now written 釘.
