鳥

とり · tori · JLPT N5 · noun

literature

🐔🐦 tori = bird; yakitori is literally grilled bird (chicken)

鳥 (tori) means bird in general, but on menus it means chicken. You already know it from yakitori: yaki (grilled) + tori (bird). The same tori hides in torii, the shrine gate, often explained as a bird perch.
