髪の毛

かみのけ · kaminoke · JLPT N3 · expression

hair (head)

💇 髪 kami (hair) + の no (of) + 毛 ke (fur) = the fur of your hair

髪 kami alone means hair on the head; 毛 ke means any hair or fur. Joined by の (of), 髪の毛 is literally hair-of-fur, an everyday way to say the hair on your head. Kami also sounds like 上 kami (top): the hair on top.

毛 — pictograph of hair/fur, 4 strokes
毛 is a pictograph showing a tuft of hair or animal fur, with strands fanning out from a base. The original oracle bone form depicted feathers or fur clearly, and the meaning broadened from 'hair/fur' to include 'wool,' 'down,' and figuratively 'tiny' or 'rough.' It also became a common surname.
