首相

しゅしょう · shushou · JLPT N3 · noun

Prime Minister

👔 首相 = head (首) + minister (相): the head minister

首 means head or first, as in 首都 (capital, the head city). 相 here means minister of state, the same 相 found in 外相 (foreign minister). So 首相 is literally the first among ministers. Shushou also echoes shush: the one who can shush the cabinet.

首 — hair 丷 over face 自 (eye + nose)
首 is a pictograph of a head, originally drawn with hair on top and a face below (containing the eye element 目). It meant 'head' literally, then extended to 'chief, leader, first' since the head is the topmost and foremost part of the body.
