🍱 食物 = eat (食) + thing (物): a thing you eat
食 (shoku) means eat, as in 食事 (shokuji, meal). 物 (motsu) means thing, as in 荷物 (nimotsu, luggage). The same two kanji flipped and read natively give 食べ物 (tabemono), the everyday word for food; 食物 is the more formal one.
