順序

じゅんじょ · junjo · JLPT N2 · noun

sequence

順 (jun, in order) + 序 (jo, sequence): things lined up in their proper order

Both characters mean an orderly arrangement. 順 suggests following along smoothly, and 序 suggests a rank or position in a line. Together they name a sequence or procedure.

序 — 广 radical (shelter) + 予 (give/I)
Originally depicted the side walls or wings of a building under the 广 (shelter) radical, with 予 serving as the phonetic component. From 'side wall' it extended to mean 'sequence' or 'order,' as walls were arranged in succession. Today it commonly means 'order,' 'sequence,' or 'preface.'
