革
かわ · kawa · JLPT N3 · noun
leather
👞🐄 kawa sounds like cover: leather is the cover taken from an animal
革 began as a drawing of an animal hide stretched out to dry. Tanning changes a raw hide into leather, so 革 also means to change, as in 革命 (revolution). Note that 皮 is read kawa too, but 皮 means raw skin and 革 means tanned leather.
