面接
めんせつ · mensetsu · JLPT N3 · noun
interview
💼🤝 面接 = face + contact: meeting someone face to face
面 means face or surface, as in 画面 (screen). 接 means to touch or connect, as in 接続 (connection). A 面接 is a face-to-face meeting where you are judged, like a job interview. Sound hook: men-setsu, a meeting set up to size up the men.
面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
接 — hand 扌 + concubine 妾 (phonetic)
接 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The hand radical 扌 carries the meaning of receiving or joining with the hand, while 妾 supplies the sound. From 'taking with the hand' it broadened to 'receive, meet, connect, join together'.
