静か

しずか · shizuka · JLPT N5 · na-adj

calm

🤫 shizuka: shh + zzz inside it, the hush and the sleep of a quiet room

The sound of the word carries its meaning: SHI is the shh you say to hush someone, ZU is the zzz of sleep, and KA closes it off. The kanji 静 means still or silent, and also appears in 安静 (rest) and 冷静 (calm, composed).

静 — 青 (blue/green) + 争 (contend/strive)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The right side 争 ('contend') originally suggested calming a dispute, while 青 lent the sound and a sense of clarity. Together they convey stillness after strife has settled, giving the modern meaning 'quiet, calm, still.'
