離す

はなす · hanasu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to part

✂️ Same sound as 放す hanasu, to let go: to part is to let go of each other

離す and 放す are both read hanasu and share one root meaning: open the hand and let go. 離 is used when the stress is on the distance that opens up, as in 目を離す (to look away). Spoken 話す is hanasu too, so it helps to remember that words also leave you when you speak.
