陽射
ひざし · hizashi · JLPT N2 · noun
sunlight
☀️ 陽 (sun) + 射 (shoot, shine) = the sun shooting its rays down at you
射 is the same character as in 反射 (hansha, reflection) and 注射 (chūsha, injection), all about something being sent forward. 陽射し is sunlight streaming down, so the word is literally sun-shooting.
射 — body 身 + inch/hand 寸
Originally a pictograph of a hand drawing a bow with an arrow. The ancient form showed 弓 (bow) plus 矢 (arrow) or a hand. Over time it was reshaped into 身 (body) plus 寸 (hand/measure), and the meaning 'to shoot' was extended to 'emit' or 'project'.
