限り
かぎり · kagiri · JLPT N2 · noun
limit
限り = 'limit' ('kagiri' echoes 'kagiri' = cut off at the edge): the end point that bounds how far something goes.
Used both for a limit (〜の限り) and for 'as far as possible' (できる限り). Think of a fence line marking the boundary of what you can reach.
限 — mound radical 阝 + 艮 (phonetic)
限 combines the 阝 (mound/hill) radical on the left with 艮 on the right, which provides the sound. The mound element suggests a boundary or barrier formed by terrain, and the character came to mean 'limit' or 'boundary' — the edge one cannot cross.
