❌ 間 (gap) + 違える (to differ): a gap opens between right and what you did
間 ma means gap or interval; 違える chigaeru means to make differ, voiced to -gaeru in the compound. So ma-chigaeru is literally to get the interval wrong. Compare 違う chigau, to be different or wrong.
