🚪 閉 = gate 門 + a bar across it: the gate is barred, so it is shut
The kanji 閉 puts a crossbar (才) inside the gate radical 門, a gate with its bolt in place. Sound hook: shimeru is like she-meh-roo, as in she may rue leaving the door open, so close it. Transitive: you shut something.
