🚪 閉 = gate 門 + a bar across it: the gate is barred, so it closes
Sound hook: shimaru starts like shim, the wedge you jam in a gap until it shuts. Intransitive: the door closes by itself (ドアが閉まる). Its partner 閉める (shimeru) is when someone closes it.
