鎖

くさり · kusari · JLPT N3 · noun

chain

⛓️ 鎖 = metal 金 + small 小 shells 貝 strung in a row: a chain

The right side once showed little shells (貝) threaded on a cord, like old shell money. Add metal (金) and the links become iron. The verb kusaru (鎖る) meant to string together, so kusari is something linked.
