釣り合う

つりあう · tsuriau · JLPT N2 · verb-godan

to suit

⚖️ 釣り (hang, as scale pans hang) + 合う (fit together) = balanced, in harmony

釣る means to hang something up, like the two pans of a scale. When both hanging sides fit together and stay level, they are balanced, so 釣り合う also means to suit each other.

合 — 乛 (lid/roof) + 口 (mouth)
Originally a pictograph of a lidded vessel — a cover (亼) closing over an opening (口) — giving the core sense of 'come together, join, fit.' From 'fit/match' it extended to 'combine, unite, agree' and to measure-word uses. The reading hé reflects this 'joining' meaning.
