金額

きんがく · kingaku · JLPT N3 · noun

sum

💰 金額 = money (金) + amount (額), so a sum of money

金 (kin) means gold or money, and 額 (gaku) means amount or a framed sum. 額 also shows up in 額縁 (picture frame). So 金額 is the money figure written inside the frame: the total on a bill or a price tag.

金 — roof 亼 + two dots (metal nuggets) + earth 土
Originally a pictograph of metal nuggets buried in the earth beneath a covering, with the two dots representing pieces of ore. It first meant 'metal' broadly, then narrowed to 'gold' as the most precious metal, and by extension 'money'.
