野党
やとう · yatou · JLPT N3 · noun
party
野党 = field + party: the party that is out in the fields, not at court
野 means field or wild. In old Chinese and Japanese usage, officials who were out of office were said to be in the fields (在野). The opposition party is the one without power. Its opposite is 与党, the ruling party.
野 — 里 (village) + 予 (phonetic)
Originally written 埜 (forest 林 over earth 土), depicting wild land beyond cultivated fields. The modern form 野 combines 里 (village/settled land) with 予 as a phonetic component, keeping the meaning of open country, wilderness, or untamed.
党 — top 龸 (尚 shàng phonetic) + 儿 (legs/person)
Simplified from 黨, originally written with 黑 (black) below 尚 (esteem), suggesting a darkened or shadowy faction. The simplified form replaces 黑 with 儿 (person/legs), keeping 尚 as the phonetic. Meaning shifted from 'clique' to neutral 'party' or 'association'.
